Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal for individuals involved in managing or responding to incidents involving hazardous chemicals. It is especially suitable for:

  • Environmental and health & safety personnel
  • Emergency response team members
  • Regulatory and compliance officers
  • Operators handling hazardous chemicals, storage or transport
  • Laboratory, R&D and chemical store staff
  • Waste management personnel liaising with hazardous waste contractors

English Language Competency


A good standard of written and spoken English is important to engage effectively with this programme. While formal certification (e.g. IELTS) is not required, learners whose first language is not English should have a self-assessed proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5–6.0 or CEFR level B2.
This level of competence will support learners in understanding course materials, contributing to discussions, and completing assessments where applicable.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the key legal and regulatory requirements concerning hazardous chemicals, including REACH/CLP
  • Identify hazardous properties and classify substances using labelling and symbols
  • Interpret and use chemical safety documentation such as Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Evaluate and improve existing spill response procedures in the workplace
  • Apply appropriate safety controls and personal protective equipment
  • Execute a spill response safely using the correct equipment and procedures
  • Report and investigate chemical spills in line with best practices

These outcomes provide the basis for improved safety and compliance in chemical management.

  • Introduction to hazardous chemicals and their health effects
  • Overview of REACH/CLP and relevant legislation
  • Permissible exposure levels and substance classification
  • Interpreting safety labelling and SDS
  • Spill preparation and clean-up protocols
  • Use of spill kits and emergency response equipment
  • PPE selection and safe handling techniques
  • Spill investigation and reporting
