Introduction

This Ex Awareness training course introduces essential knowledge needed to understand the risks, hazards, and safety measures for working in environments where explosive atmospheres may be present. Ex A has been developed to support safety, compliance, and informed decision-making in hazardous areas and helps to build awareness of:

  • Hazard perception
  • Key safety standards
  • Fundamental principles of hazardous area working

Course Overview

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for anyone who:

  • Enters hazardous locations or visits Ex sites.
  • Performs on-site work such as scaffolding, mechanical, electrical, welding etc.
  • Is employed by a company working in hazardous locations.
  • Delivers goods, equipment, products etc. to site.
  • Designs or procures equipment for hazardous areas.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and structure of ISO 45001 and ISO 19011 within the PDCA framework
  • Describe the responsibilities of an internal auditor in planning, conducting, reporting and following up an internal OH&SMS audit
  • Prepare audit documentation including checklists and audit plans
  • Conduct effective internal audits, including evidence gathering and interviewing techniques
  • Evaluate compliance with OH&S policy, procedures, and legal requirements
  • Communicate audit findings clearly and constructively
  • Contribute to the continual improvement of occupational health and safety management systems

These outcomes ensure real-world audit competence that drives improvement in workplace settings.

Course Contents

  • Hazardous Area Recognition: Identifying explosive atmospheres, signage, and documentation.
  • Ignition Hazards: Understanding common ignition sources and how to prevent them.
  • Safety Procedures: Adhering to safe systems of work, including permits and personal responsibilities.
  • Protection Concepts: Basic overview of equipment selection and protection concepts for hazardous locations.
  • Regulations and Standards: Awareness of relevant IEC standards, ATEX, and DSEAR regulations.
  • Risk Management: Knowing how to escalate safety concerns or seek specialist support.

Course Tutors

This course is delivered by highly experienced tutors with specialist knowledge in hazardous environments.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements or pre-requisites for attending this course. However, candidates may find it useful to engage with pre-learning material made available to them on the CompEx Knowledge Hub (CKH). Candidates are automatically registered on the CKH at point of registration for any CompEx qualification.

All learners, both new and existing CompEx candidates, must complete registration with the CompEx system prior to confirmation of booking. https://registration.compexcertification.com

Assessment

Learners will need a laptop for the examination which is remotely invigilated in line with CompEx requirements.

Knowledge checks are short and informal during the course between each learning objective.

Assessment details include:

  • Multiple-choice online exam at the end of the course
  • Assessment duration is 25 minutes
  • 14 questions

Successful learners will receive the internationally recognised CompEx Awareness certificate. The certificate awarded does not infer competency. It is an introductory, level 1 award.

The enclosed nature of such spaces amplifies hazards, increasing the potential for serious or even fatal accidents. This course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to work safely and effectively in confined spaces.

Delivered as a one-day, practical training experience, this programme empowers individuals and teams to identify risks, apply appropriate safety systems, and respond efficiently to emergencies. It is tailored to meet the unique needs of each organisation, with a strong focus on real-world applicability.
